Disney entering the social networking scene

The Walt Disney Company has revealed that it is to launch a new social media site aimed at mothers who look to the internet for interest and advice, heralding a change in the company's marketing techniques.

Previously the firm had focused solely on Disney-branded content, but the new site will compile information from around the internet in order to provide a comprehensive resource to parents. Users will also be able to add to the database themselves.

Paid search advertising will be central to the company's attempts to make the website a profitable venture, Disney revealed.

Analysts praised the forthcoming site's content, which was based on a survey of more than 30,000 mothers conducted over the past year.

"To get community right, you need to have the right mix between homegrown content plus the ability to loop in people and content from outside. That takes guts because you don't really know what users are going to say. It's uncharacteristic for a company that wants to control things as much as Disney," said Josh Bernoff of Forrester Research, speaking to the Associated Press.

A recent study by Nickelodeon suggested that as many as 98 per cent of US parents were now internet users.

Disney's Contemporary Resort and Convention Center

At Disney's Contemporary Resort, the decor of the rooms has evolved from its current style of bold, bright colors taken from the Contemporary Art Masters of the '50s and '60s, to a fresh, modern, upscale feel featuring an elegant design that incorporates muted color accents -- reds, greens and yellows -- with basic black and whites.

"The word 'contemporary' can have a lot of different meanings," says Kevin Myers, vice president of Walt Disney World Resort hotels. "What we've tried to do is create a warm environment where guests -- whether on business or vacation -- can feel at home."

Guests will discover furnishings with dark, rich wood tones and detailed millwork that is accented by marbled-topped nightstands and console tables. A spacious glass-top desk in each room provides a place for business travelers to work and leisure travelers to organize their fun. And when it is time to turn in, fresh duvet covers and linens await, with beautifully woven bed throws atop divine bedding.

Disney's Polynesian Resort

At Disney's Polynesian Resort, the rooms have been given a fresh look to complement the resort's original 1971 "South Seas Island" theme. The hallmark look of Disney's Polynesian Resort has been revived with new color tones, custom furniture and tapestry that highlight the tropical island décor of Polynesia. Dark, hand-carved wood contrasts with tropical blues, greens and browns in the bedspreads, paintings and wall coverings.

"It was important for us to bring the latest in room amenities to our guests and still maintain its popularity with the original tropical theme of the rooms," said Dave Venables, general manager of Disney's Polynesian Resort. "The 32-inch LCD TV, for example, was custom fit into a bamboo wood bureau cabinet to seemingly blend in with the room's décor."

As guests enter, they will find a spacious earth-tone-flavored room with hand-carved lighting fixtures and custom headboards for the beds that reach from the floor to the ceiling in traditional Polynesian style.

1) Refurbishment work on the Haunted Mansion including a themed gift shop at the exit

2) Updates to some of the scenes within Spaceship Earth

3) Rumors about a night time parade at the Animal Kingdom.

Considering the rate at which pirates—and pirate merchandise—are overtaking Disneyland, it appears as if the park's marketing staff is eager to bring its phenomenally successful Golden Anniversary celebration to a close. Some of the 50th decorations have already been taken down; most of the rest of the special features should be stripped away by Halloween.Whatever you do, make sure you get the chance to savor the historical exhibit "Disneyland: The First 50 Magical Years" at the Opera House. The antiques are interesting, and the Steve Martin movie is fun. But, best of all, is the exhibit's heart—a 12-foot-by-12-foot scale model reproduction of Disneyland on Opening Day 1955. I've seen hundreds of photos of 1955's Magic Kingdom, from every conceivable angle, but never before in three dimensions, in living color. The display is spectacular, providing a deeper sense of what the park was like years before most of us had the chance to visit.
